Naimisharanya is one of the sacred places, according to Hindu mythology. Besides, it also shares rich spiritual, cultural, and historical importance. Naimish and Nimsar are the other names for this holy place. The mythological and spiritual linkage to Naimisharanya connects it to the folklore that proclaims it the abode of the famous Hindu deity and the God of preservation, Lord Vishnu. Another belief goes that Sage (Rishi) Shaunak asked Lord Brahma, the God of creation, to grant him knowledge. Lord Brahma gave him a chakra (rotating disc) and said to establish his ashram wherever the rim of the chakra falls. That would be a holy place. The rim of Chankra fell on the bank of the river Gomti and was soon absorbed in the sand. Valmiki Ramayan states that Lord Rama, the incarnation of God Vishnu and the king of Ayodyha, performed ‘Ashvmeghya Yagya’ near its bank. Lord Krishna, along with his elder brother Balram, performed sacrifices here. According to Mahabharta, Yudhisthir and Arjun also visited this place. The pride of Hindi literature, Mahakavi Narrottam Das, is also believed to reside here.
Naimisharanya is considered an abnormality of Nimisha, which means splendour of the eye. It has also been the centre of learning for 88,000 sages in ancient times. Pilgrims of the four sacred places (chaardham) believe that the journey to Badrinath and Kedarnath cannot be considered complete until paying a visit to Naimisharanya. People from different and distant places visit this place very often. Chakratirth, Vyasgaadi, Booteshwar, Hawankund, Lalitadevi Temple, Panchpryaag, Shesh Temple, Kshemkaya Temple, Hanuman Garhi, Shivala-Bhairavji Temple, Panch Pandav Temple, Puran Mandir, and so on are the famous places to visit.
Perched on the bank of the Gomti River, its verdant setting and serene surroundings make it a hard-to-miss natural tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy a truly holistic experience thanks to the ideal balance of spirituality and tranquillity. This holy place also presents great economic opportunities for the tourism and hospitality sectors. The government’s initiative and upcoming development of this area make it a perfect investment destination for businessmen and investors alike.
